German Chancellor Olaf Scholz instructed the authorities to stop the certification of the Russian-German gas pipeline Nord Stream-2.
According to the local newspaper Zeit, he was prompted to take such a step by Moscow’s decision to recognize the independence of the DPR and the LPR, which, according to the Chancellor, seriously violates international legal norms.
Another edition of Handelsblatt mentions that at a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin, which took place in Berlin, Scholz explained that “today’s situation is fundamentally different,” commenting on the new attitude of the authorities to the launch of the gas pipeline.
Recall, as Topnews wrote, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia’s decision on Donbass to Scholz himself, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron.
Both Western leaders expressed their disappointment with this decision, but they did not refuse further contacts with the Russian head.
The latest negotiations on “SP-2” between Moscow and Berlin took place on February 15 in Moscow. Then the leaders of the two countries talked about maintaining the Minsk agreements.
And last summer, the United States and Germany announced that the gas pipeline would be introduced without additional sanctions against Russia.
In exchange, Russia and Ukraine had to extend the transit agreement for ten years. At the same time, it was stated that Moscow’s policy, which uses the Sevpotok 2 as a weapon, was unacceptable.
Later, in December, Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller told the media that the pipeline was fully ready for launch. But the certification of the facility was delayed against the background of statements by the United States, which promised to stop it if Russia invaded Ukraine, meaning the territory of Donbass.
