Russia proposed to introduce a new payment unit

Experts have indicated countries that can make such a decision to Russia.

The media reports on the proposal of economists from the Institute of National Economic Forecasting of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Center for Macroeconomic Analysis (CMACP) to create a new payment unit.

According to their plan, it should be used for settlements with friendly countries.

According to RBC, which has an analytical note by the authors of the project, its creation was influenced by the introduction of unilateral anti-Russian sanctions by the West. In particular, we are talking about retaliatory measures within the framework of Moscow’s demand for Europe to pay for gas in rubles.

Economists have suggested that the non-dollar settlement may be of interest to the EAEU countries, as well as India, China, Iran, Turkey and a number of other countries.

Thus, they will be able to reduce dependence on reserve currency reserves through which they are influenced by issuing countries.

The rate of the new unit will depend on the weighted average price of resources on the world market, the publication explains.

The process of converting a new unit into national currencies and back will be carried out by the clearing center of the system. The emergence of a secondary market for a new currency is also likely, which will allow countries to use it as a reserve.

As Topnews wrote, the requirement for European countries to pay for gas supplies in rubles was put forward on March 23 by President Vladimir Putin.

The volume and cost of fuel will remain in accordance with the contracts. In response, German Prime Minister Scholz said that the price in the contract is not indicated in rubles, but in other monetary units.
